I have to be honest! Even though I feel I have a very good knowledge of scripture, I never have been great at Bible verse memory to the point of being good at connecting exact chapter and verse to my knowledge. Of course, there are some famous verses that I have memorized by heart such as John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8. I do a pretty good job of placing many scriptures with the right book of the bible; such as remembering the scripture came from Matthew or the book of Revelation. But, chapter and verse really is a challenge for me. So I did some research online of some bible verse memory tips that really have helped me with this problem. I would like to share them with you and hope that these tips will help others that have the same problems with bible verse memory as I do.

1) Read the bible verse out-loud to yourself. Research has shown that reading aloud helps with learning because of the extra senses involved of hearing the words with your ears and feeling the formation of the words by your mouth. Make sure you read the entire verse including the chapter and verse a minimum of 10 times in a row in order to receive the full effect of this memory tip.

2) Recite from memory the bible verse out-loud to someone else. Once you have built some confidence in yourself, go ahead and say the verse form memory only to someone else. If you have no one else to work with; a trick I used as a drill sergeant was to use a tape recorder. This is effective because it allows the other person or the playback of voice audio to identify the words you are having the most difficulties with. Research shows that the struggle of the brain to remember the words is a critical part of the learning process.

3) Make some flashcards. This is a three-step process of writing the entire bible verse (including book, chapter, and verse) on a 3 X 5 card and writing again of a piece of paper a minimum of 5 times. Just like with the reading aloud, writing down on paper is another dimension (or sense [touch]) to use to help the brain remember the bible verse. To use the 3 X 5 cards, take several cards of different verses you would like to remember and shuffle them; this is important because you do not want to know the order of the verses. The surprise element of not knowing the order is another trigger and technique to make the brain work harder and boggles the brain into the learning process.

The last step is to carry the 3 X 5 cards with you everywhere you go and use them at any and every opportunity. No need for a planned place and time to study. If you find yourself waiting in line at the grocery store, pull out the cards and challenge yourself while waiting those 2 or 3 minutes to check-out. You would be surprised to find out how much of a typical day is spent idol in places such as waiting in line. You will find it will only take a few days to learn verses you have struggled with for a lifetime!
