The Apostles Creed

apostles creedThe Apostles Creed is mostly used by the Catholic and Lutheran religions, but there is plenty of great meaning found in the words of this creed for a good-old Evangelical Christian such as me. There are many different versions of this creed since it was first written by Ambrose, a council member of Pope Siricius sometime around the year 390. The version below is the most accepted English version since its use in the Mass of the Roman Rite in 2011. I find the creed is straight to the point and summarizes the beliefs of followers of Jesus almost perfectly. I simply remove the word "catholic" from the 15th line in order to adapt the creed to my personal Christian beliefs. This creed is great for memorization and use as a reminder of what the core beliefs should be for every member of the Holy Church.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.
