It is very well-known that Buzz Aldrin was the second man to walk on the moon. But, did you know that before stepping into history, he did something else that many non-believers may not want the world to know. Just before walking on the moon, Buzz Aldrin took Holy Communion. He took wafers and a bottle of wine given to him by the Webster Presbyterian Church in Webster, Texas and made the holiest of devotions to thank God for His grace and protection of the Apollo 11 trip and making their success possible.
Below is a clip from the 1998 HBO miniseries "Form the Earth to the Moon" that dramatized Buzz's Holy Communion on the moon in 1970.
The whole act was stifled because of founder of American atheist, Madalyn Murray's, threat to sue the U.S. Government.
According to PBS, “She tried to prevent the reading of Genesis 8 on the Apollo space mission, arguing that the astronauts were government employees and thus prohibited from reading the Bible.”
Even though people were not allowed to hear the communion live as Buzz wanted, he was allowed to participate with those at the Houston Space Center Mission Control and read:
"I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me." (John 15:5)
While there may be a lot of controversy and debate over whether this act was right or wrong or whether U.S. government employees have any business mixing so-called "church with state!"
I Praise God and thank Buzz for doing what he did! Maybe if more leaders stood up and thanked God the way Buzz did in 1970, maybe God would bless us and allow more great events such as the first to land on the moon come to Americans. Maybe, the reason why America is in decline and we cannot even afford to continue missions in space is because our leaders and many Americans have forsaken Holy Communion.
