What is Epiphany?

Epiphany - retrieved from: http://church.gslcs.org/NLgraphics/January_07_1.gifUnless you're an Orthodox, Catholic, or Anglican Christian, you may not have any idea what the Epiphany holiday is all about. Most Protestants such as myself don't understand the significance behind one of the earliest feasts of the Christian church.
The word Epiphany means "manifestation" or "revelation" and is linked with the visit of the three wise men to the Christ child and through the wise men Christ revealed himself to the world. Epiphany is also known as "Three Kings Day" and "Twelfth Day." This holiday is always celebrated on January 6 because this day is the twelfth day after Christmas. Many denomination of the Christian Church believe that the twelfth day after Christmas signals the conclusion of the twelve days of the Christmas season. Most denominations believe this marks the manifestation of God in the form of human flesh through Jesus Christ, his son, and celebrates this miracle with a feast.

For anyone that lives or lived anywhere close to Tarpon Springs, Florida. You would be well aware of this holiday because this city is famous for its Greeks heritage and celebration of Epiphany. Greek Americans from all over the world come there to participate in the festivities. Some of the festivities would include the Divine Liturgy, the blessings of the Holy Water, sanctification of the waters, the Dove release, dive for the cross, and the Epiphany Glendi Festival.
